Classmate PC Coming To America…and Europe
Intel wants everyone to have a computer:
Up until now, both Intel’s Classmate PC and the OLPC Foundation’s OLPC XO laptop have been explicitly targeted towards poor students in developing countries. Intel plans to change that focus with the second generation of the Classmate PC, however, announcing that future versions of the laptop will be available to US and European consumers at a price point between $250-350.
That’s encouraging. I’ve never understood the OLPC approach of making a whole new class of technology — ultra cheap, ultra portable laptops — available only in the developing world. The more people who adopt a technology, the more more likely it will be to succeed.
