Image Editing In The Cloud

With Adobe releasing PhotoShop Express, online photo editors get some street cred. Picnik is another popular online photo editor. I’m still skeptical of online apps in general (email not withstanding), but they certainly seem inevitable.

Sirius Buyout of XM Radio Approved

Sirius Buyout of XM Radio Approved

Merger details: The Justice Department approved Sirius Satellite Radio’s $5 billion buyout of rival XM Satellite Radio on Monday, saying the deal was unlikely to hurt competition or consumers. The deal was approved despite opposition from consumer groups and an intense lobbying campaign by the land-based radio industry. The buyout received shareholder approval in November. The companies said the merger will save hundreds of millions of dollars in operating costs—savings that will ultimately benefit their customers.
Cheap Laptops Get Better

Cheap Laptops Get Better

The Dell Vostro 1000 laptop has a starting price of $399 with free shipping. That seems to be the normal “every day” price, but a bundle is now available for $429 that ups the ante with a fast dual core cpu, double the memory, a battery upgrade, and a DVD burner. Nice.
Gamma Ray Burst Lights Up The Universe

Gamma Ray Burst Lights Up The Universe

Really, really energetic: Scientists have detected an interstellar explosion so bright that it was briefly visible to the naked eye—from 7.5 billion light-years away. Viewers looking at the right patch of night sky on Wednesday would have seen several afterglows from the massive gamma-ray burst, slightly brighter than the faintest visible stars. … Gamma-ray bursts occur when massive stars run out of fuel and collapse, rapidly pouring out enormous amounts of high-energy radiation and particles. Acting like high-power cosmic blowtorches, the particle jets can also heat interstellar clouds [...]

Centro Sales Success Won’t Save Palm

Centro Sales Success Won’t Save Palm

The Palm Centro is a big hit, but can the company actually make money off a $99 smartphone? Probably not. Palm has maybe one chance to come out with a serious iPhone competitor if they hope to recapture even a small amount of their former glory. I hope they pull it off, but I think Palm’s best days are in the past.
Classmate PC Coming To America…and Europe

Classmate PC Coming To America…and Europe

Intel wants everyone to have a computer: Up until now, both Intel’s Classmate PC and the OLPC Foundation’s OLPC XO laptop have been explicitly targeted towards poor students in developing countries. Intel plans to change that focus with the second generation of the Classmate PC, however, announcing that future versions of the laptop will be available to US and European consumers at a price point between $250-350. That’s encouraging. I’ve never understood the OLPC approach of making a whole new class of technology — ultra cheap, ultra portable laptops — available [...]

Hulu Goes Public Tomorrow

Hulu Goes Public Tomorrow

Online video site Hulu, a joint venture of Fox and NBC, opens to the public tomorrow, March 12. I’ve been a beta user for a while, and Hulu has a lot to offer. The Reuters blurb sums up Hulu’s depth of content nicely: At launch, Hulu will offer full-length episodes of more than 250 TV series, from current hits such as The Simpsons to older shows such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It also will offer 100 movies, including The Big Lebowski and Mulholland Drive. Cable and Satellite TV services are fast becoming redundant.

In The Year 2525

Cleopatra 2525 was short-lived camp sci-fi series from 2000-2001 — think Xena, only set in a post-apocalyptic future. Full episodes are available online via Hulu. Firefly fans might enjoy seeing Gina Torres playing “Helen”. Here’s more background on the series.
