Geek Squad Should Fire More Geeks

Posted on July 30th, 2007.

A 3 month Consumerist.com sting operation netted video evidence of one Geek Squad employee copying porn files from a customer computer. Consumerist refused to name the employee, instead blaming the company. A few other whistle blowers have reported similar shenanigans. But now that Geek Squad is finally taking steps to stop the file copying, Consumerist is accusing them of being on a “witch hunt” because a supervisor at a store where abuses were reportedly going on has been fired.

Apparently Geek Squad is supposed to get their employees to stop breaking the rules without punishing them when they do. Here’s some free advice: if you catch an employee copying your customer’s private files, fire his ass.

Geek Squad isn’t blameless here. I’m sure they tell employees at some point during their training not to copy data — they shouldn’t have to, but I’m sure they do. However, they should also realize that they are hiring from a pool of potential employees containing many guys who think all data should be free for the taking. There’s no way to screen out all bad employees, so Geek Squad needs to catch as many of these porn thieves as possible in the act, and make examples of them. That’s how you fix that problem.
