YOU @ YMAIL.COM and ROCKETMAIL.COM

Posted on June 19th, 2008.

If you’ve tried to sign up for a Yahoo! email address in the last few years, finding an available user name was probably a frustrating experience. But now, it sounds like you’re about to get another chance. On Thursday, Yahoo! will begin offering a new email domain, “ymail.com”, to new and existing users. There will likely be a land-rush to get new names, and who can blame anyone for wanting to grab a sexy new address: joecool@ymail.com is certainly preferable to joekooll2789@yahoo.com.

Yahoo! will also begin offering rocketmail.com email addresses. You may remember RocketMail as one of the earlier free email sites on the web. The company behind the domain got acquired by Yahoo! some time in the distant past, and the name is finally getting resurrected. Both “new” addresses will have all the features of regular Yahoo! email accounts: unlimited storage, integrated instant messaging, 10MB attachments, spam and virus protection, and a very nice web-2.0 design (and, unfortunately, plenty of ads).

If you’re interested in a ymail.com or rocketmail.com name, get over there early before all the good ones are taken. The post I linked to said the service was launching “tomorrow”, and it was posted on 06/18/2008, so the new addresses should be available today, 06/19/2008.

UPDATE: Word is that the new new domains will be available around noon PT today. And here’s the Yahoo! press release regarding the new domains.
